Openings & New Work

December, 2008

Aron and I have finally gotten moved into our new studio space. We will be at Nelligan Hall, a building we bought with a few other people back in 2005. Its an old democratic club in the Portland Neighborhood complete with a bar and a kitchen. We tried to sell the place but everything kept falling through the cracks. Since the LAVA house burnt down, it just made sense to turn the place into a collective studio space.

Right now, the space is still in transition. We have been building studios inside the place with mostly scrapped wood and building materials that Aron liberated from dumpsters. Aron, Kent Getsinger, and Jae Grady have all worked really hard on getting the walls up. Since Thanksgiving, we've been working on putting ceilings on top of the studios so they can be heated with a space heater. Artists renting studio spaces will also be able to use the top of their space for storage.

Both Aron and I have been taking Intro to Painting at UofL this semester. Our final critique is on the 17th. The class has taken up quite a bit of our time, so we've not been making too much work between that and getting the studio up and running.

In January, I am going back to school full time to get my MAT (Master's of Arts in Teaching). I'm going to become a high school art teacher. In order to finish the program in 3 semesters so I can start teaching in the Fall of 2010, I have to take 4 classes per semester. Yikes! Its going to be stressful. In the meantime, I'm going to try to enjoy my last month of freedom.

3/31/08 - RE:ACTION

Aron and I had our first 2-person show, finally. Little did we know that the studio fire was going to destroy all our work 3 months before it was scheduled to open! Being the hard working horses that we are, we forged ahead and created a new body of work for the show in about 6 weeks.

2/26/08 - Dearest Googleganger
This is a little hand-made mail art book I created. Let me explain the title.... In January of this year, Aron and I heard from a couple people that the Courier Journal and Louisville Magazine listed us as having an opening at Swanson-Reed. I googled my name and stumbled across another Hallie Jones. Her bio was hosted on a publishing company's website. She is an author that is writing her first series of children's books. So, I emailed this "Hallie Jones" of New York through her publishing company. When she responded, she told me that Hallie Jones was her pen name. I'm not going to reveal any more information about my "Googleganger" other than this: she lives in New York, Aron and I are meeting her in April, she's very successful, funny, and super cool. Hallie and I are delighted to have met each other and have become fast friends.

"Dearest Googleganger" is a book I created to mail to my Googleganger, Hallie Jones.

2/6/08 - Aron and I were set to have a 2-person show in March at Swanson-Reed Contemporary Gallery (downtown Louisville on East Market Street). We had been focused on preparing for that show for the past several months. Then, our plans suddenly changed.

On Saturday, January 26th, our studio for the past 6 years (The LAVA House) burned to the ground. Aron and I own a house on the same block, just 4 doors down. We heard the fire trucks while sitting in our bedroom. We ran out the door and down the street - entering into a world of pain, loss, and chaos.

On a personal note, Aron and I lost a whole lot of belongings in the fire. After spending 6 years in one location, you collect a lot of things. We lost all of our tools (except for the few that were in our house), art supplies, sketch books, personal items and keepsakes, mockettes and artist proofs, numerous completed works, and several works in progress. The list could go on for miles.

People keep asking how they can help us. One way you can help Aron and I personally would be with art supplies. Another way would be gift cards. If you're an art collector, you could purchase our photo series "The Uninviting" which is currently on display at Plexus Contemporary.

We're still considering having some sort of show in March, but that's up in the air right now. There is some talk of a group show that involves the LAVA artists.

You can visit www.thelavahouse.org for more information about the fire.

That's all for now, I guess.
